There is so much history in the city you cannot help but stumble across it. We took a stroll around what we call 'the fort' at home. In fact, this is Fort Thüngen which now houses Musée Dräi Eechelen. On one side is the modern Mudam art gallery, and on the other a series of fortifications, walls, tunnels and passages leading all the way down into the historic old city.

Built in 1732 you can walk around the remains of the fort easily today. There are good transport links with several large car parks nearby and the tram comes close at the Philharmonie/Mudam stop.

The Musée Dräi Eechelen probably needs it's own post but if military history is your thing it is a museum not to be missed.

It's not a bad spot for a picnic and a good place to start if you want to devise your own walk through the old fortifications. It features on a Circuits Auto-Pédestres which are circular routes, between four and 16 kilometres in length and are marked by a blue flag on a white background.

You will also end up here if you follow the Circuit Vauban

When we were tired of the incredible views of Luxembourg, we enjoyed spotting lizards as they basked in the sunshine, and ran away to hide in the old walls as we came close.
