Luxembourg town centre looks like a giant castle. It is in fact a series of forts and castles built up and over one another since Luxembourg was founded in 963. Founder of the House of Luxembourg, Count Siegfried of the Ardennes came from the Abbey of Trier, where he was Protector, and built his fortified castle on the Bock promontory. It was called Lucilinburhuc.

This is a great place to start if you'd like to explore the city. The Wenzel Walk and the circular Vauban Walk both start here. Here is also the place to catch the Petrusse Express; the green train that takes you on a tour of the old town.

The Bock Casemates are also here and this is also the place you need to be to look down on the Grund and Neumünster Abbey. It is also very close to the Fish Market; the historical centre of the old town. Now, the National Museum of History and Art is here. So all in all it is a good place to start if you'd like to see a lot of history in one spot!

Round the corner on Mount de Pfaffenthal we were able to look on the other side of the valley back to Fort Thungen.
